What is Leadership Coaching?

Taking a personalized approach to your development.

A Tailored Approach
for YOUR Needs

As a leader, I honestly believe that you likely have most of the technical skills you need to be successful. Yet to be truly effective, you may need something other than attending another training or conference.

In my experience, what’s often missing in leadership development is a more personalized approach that takes YOU into consideration, meaning your personal style and your unique situation. This is where leadership coaching comes in.

It’s a collaborative relationship.

Leadership coaching is a collaborative relationship between you and me as your coach that is tailored to you. I’m your ally who sees in you unlimited potential and the ability to attain the goals you’ve set for yourself.

It’s a process that focuses on your development as a leader, where you receive support from me in a way that’s designed to help you work more productively. Our shared goal is to help you become more effective as a leader through sustained behavioral change.

I’ve found most coaching falls into two main areas: developmental coaching and coaching to resolve problems or risks.

Developmental coaching tends to focus on areas that reinforce your leadership presence. This could involve improving on your existing communication skills, identifying tools to better balance the personal and professional demands on your time, or improving awareness of your own emotions and the emotions of those around you.

Coaching to resolve problems or risks focuses on those things that are getting in the way of you being as effective as you could be. This could involve identifying strategies to reduce conflict with a team member, better navigating office politics, changing self-sabotaging behaviors to prevent career derailment, or managing stress.

The Comfort Zone vs. The Courage Zone

Being a leader requires action. By using your real-world experiences, I’ll work with you to help you clarify your goals and identify solutions that work for you.

This means I’ll ask you to commit to taking action that will help you achieve your goal. I’ll follow up with you and ask what worked and didn’t work, as well as what you learned in the process.

As your coach, I’m there to:

  • Support you in becoming the leader you want to be.

  • Effectively use our time together by engaging in deep listening and powerful questioning.

  • Celebrate your learning and increased self-awareness.

  • Empower you to make and implement your own decisions.

  • Facilitate your growing confidence in your ability to find your own answers and solve problems.

What leadership coaching ISN’T.

You are the expert on you. As a leadership coach, I am NOT going to:

  • Give you technical advice on how to do your job.

  • Be a career counselor, although I can certainly help you in exploring and finding the right fit for your strengths and talents.

  • Tell you how to solve a problem or give you advice on what you should do. Instead, through careful questioning and deep listening, I’ll explore with you possible ideas or strategies that align with your personality and values.

  • Train you on being a leader. Instead of providing a standard formula, I’ll encourage self-reflection and introspection in a way that’s specifically tailored to you to help you uncover your own leadership potential.
